7Cs

What are the 7Cs?

The 7Cs form part of The Essential SENCO Toolkit, which is a strengths-based framework for learners with SEND and provides a ‘language’ of assessment for staff, learners and their families. It includes a focus on the functions of learning support & overcoming or (where possible) removing barriers to learning.

Within this toolkit sits an assessment and intervention resource and a progress tracker that includes the 7 C’s learning portfolio which helps to capture strengths and barriers to learning which then leads to information action that is ‘additional to or different from’ the differentiated curriculum.

The 7Cs are:

  • Curriculum
  • Cognition
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Control
  • Compassion
  • Co-ordination

The 7Cs at Horizon School

Through our 7Cs, we aim is to have a consistent approach across the school, in capturing and celebrating what positive learning behaviours look like, and individuals’ strengths in their learning.

We have aligned our rewards system with the 7Cs, where students are awarded Class Dojos for demonstrating any of the 7Cs during the school day.  Each half term, certificates are awarded for the student who has achieved the most Dojos for each of the aspects.

Students complete a 7Cs self-assessment each term and this is used to monitor their progress.  Staff also complete the 7Cs assessment on the students each half term, with the results informing the student’s Personalised Action Plan (PAP). The results of both are shared with parents, the dual registered school and other professionals working with the student via the dashboard of the PAP, which is issued half-termly.

The 7Cs are also displayed within each classroom at Horizon to support students in being familiar with them.
