English
English will teach students to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others. With reading in particular, students have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Reading also enables students both to gain knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society.
The aim for English in the National Curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping students with a strong understanding of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
At Horizon School, lessons are planned and taught following the National Curriculum. Most of our English lessons are linked to the wider curriculum or a text. Children are exposed to high quality texts to develop their spoken language, reading and writing. Our curriculum develops students’ ability to share their ideas and communicate effectively.
