About our school

Horizon School is situated in the coastal town of Lowestoft. The town itself is set on a backdrop of an award-winning beach and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. The Gulliver wind turbine stands proudly over the town and the seafront boasts beautiful golden sandy beaches. Lowestoft is located in the county of Suffolk and is the most easterly point in the United Kingdom, situated just 22 miles southeast of Norwich. There is a train route to London Liverpool Street via Ipswich which is 50 miles to the south. With these good transport links it makes Lowestoft a popular place to live.

Horizon School is an established part of Suffolk County Council’s provision for children and young people experiencing social, emotional, and mental health difficulties that put them at risk of exclusion from their mainstream schools. It is one of a number of pupil referral units and alternative provisions across the county that support children throughout compulsory mainstream education. Our school serves North Suffolk, a mix of coastal and rural communities, market towns and villages.

At Horizon School, we believe that every child deserves the best education to enable them to make good progress and the opportunity to realise their full potential. The Horizon School Team works towards ensuring that when young people leave us, they have developed a respect for learning and the skills and self-confidence needed to help them succeed in their return to mainstream education, further education, training, employment, and post-school life.

We aim to build partnerships with parents, carers and young people that are based on honesty, trust and mutual respect which underpin the support for the academic, vocational, personal, and emotional development of our children and young people.

Horizon School has had extensive building and refurbishment work completed over the last 18 months. The school moved to the new buildings during the summer term 2023. It currently provides three services:

  • Horizon Lower School
  • Horizon Upper School
  • Horizon School Dragonfly

Horizon School is working towards becoming a Trauma Informed Provision. Practice also includes restorative approaches to resolving conflict.
